“Sharing debutante status with the trombones and contrabassoon in the triumphal final movement of Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony,” writes Nancy Nourse,the piccolo’s arrival at the doorstep of music’s Great Western Canon in such an iconic masterpiece is celebrated in an almost cult-like manner.”   It turns out, however, that the piccolo and its equivalents had appeared quite a few times before Beethoven!
