Jim Walker presents a masterclass under the auspices of The Music Academy of the West, June 30 2016.
As well as his work with M.A.W., Jim Walker is Professor of Flute and Chamber Music at The Colburn Conservatory of Music and Professor of Practice at the University of Southern California’s Thornton School of Music.
The class begins with three pieces by Gabriel Fauré, the Sicilienne, op. 78, The Morceau de Concourse, Fantasie, op. 79 played by flutist HyeRyung Lim with Sora Jung at the piano.
Next we hear Anthony Trionfo, accompanied by pianist Nathan Cheung performing the J.S.Bach G minor sonata BWV 1020
Patrick Tsuji, flute, with Margaret McDonald, piano now play Carl Vine, Sonata (Very Fast)
Annie Wu plays the Henri Dutilleux Sonatine with Minju Kim on piano.
Jimmy Walker joins all four student flutists, Lim, Trionfo, Tsuji (alto flute) and Wu, to perform his arrangement of Spanish Flamenco by Jose Valentino.
To conclude the session, Prof. Walker leads the group in a guided improvisation in E Major, F Major, and G Major, as related to the beginning of the Valentino composition.
