As part of our Focus on Piccolo series, Flute Journal is proud to present the world premiere of Farewell Feathered Friends by JacobTV (Jacob Ter Veldhuis, 1951), performed on piccolo by Ilonka Kolthof during a livestream concert on May 28, 2020 at Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in Amsterdam.

Broadcast live by NPO Radio 4, NTR Avondconcert, the piece is a dialogue for piccolo and 5 endangered birds and was composed during the Covid-19 lockdown at the initiative of composer/musicologist Heather Pinkham who, reflecting conditions for musicians during the Covid19 emergency, invited 12 composers to write a small piece for 12 individual musicians under the umbrella of Music for Empty Spaces.
