[Editor’s Note: There is a handful of artists who can be called World Flute performers, musicians who have incorporated flutes of various kinds, and their music, into their performances. One such artist who has recently joined our team is Tereasa Payne, who represents both world flute performance and woodwind doubling. You can see her introduction to world flutes below]
Tereasa Payne – World Flutes
Tereasa Payne is a flutist, world flutist, clarinetist & saxophonist who transitions between styles and instruments. A typical month of performances will take her from playing flute and piccolo with symphony orchestras and as a recitalist, to playing saxophone accompanying world-renowned artists on tour, to playing flutes, world flutes, clarinet, and saxophone in Broadway shows in New York City. She is a substitute with Broadway shows: Disney’s The Lion King, Something Rotten and Allegiance.
Tereasa studied flute with Marianne Gedigian at Boston University, Trygve Peterson at Arizona State University, Patricia Masek at Augustana College, and Cindy Meyers (currently solo piccolo with the Boston Symphony) in Omaha, Nebraska. She has studied saxophone and clarinet with Sal Lozano (Los Angeles studio musician and member of the Big Phat Band), Ed Joffe and Simon Hutchings (NYC Woodwinds Artist)s. Tereasa uses the vast knowledge gained from these amazing teachers to maintain a private studio of talented students around the world, both in person and via online lessons.
Tereasa has appeared on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon as panflute soloist with musical guest, Kygo. She was also a member of the Bombshell Orchestra on the NBC hit series, Smash. The ensemble’s primary objective is to raise awareness of woodwind specialists and their high level of performance ability. Of Tereasa’s woodwind doubling skills, world-renown flutist, Jim Walker, has said: “Tereasa Payne is one of the bright new woodwind stars on the planet. She is helping to redefine the stereotype of just what is a woodwind doubler.”
Dedicated to learning and sharing world flutes, Tereasa works as a consultant with composers, orchestrators, and arrangers as they score for these unique and beautiful instruments. She performs her lecture-recital, A tour of World Flutes, (performing on 15-25 flutes from around the world) for schools, universities, arts organizations, community groups, retirement homes, hospice centers, and homebound seniors throughout New York City and the United States. As an introduction to this presentation she has prepared a short video which can be seen here.
